Internet Weather App

In partnership with the The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

Our goal is to create a kind of "internet weather app," a component of our larger Internet Monitor project that will allow users of mobile devices to check the status of the internet access, censorship, cybersecurity climates around the world, with both global and individual country views. We think this will be hugely valuable in spreading awareness of internet freedom and access issues, as well as providing convenient access to timely, high-quality data to journalists, researchers, and advocates. The app will provide, simple, striking data-rich visualizations, while being as easy to understand and use as an actual weather app. It will grab all the data it needs from our existing internet monitor api server.

About the Project

The purpose of this project is to design an application targeted towards activists and researchers, for raising awareness of a lack of global Internet access and freedom. This mobile app will display country and global statistics for different aspects relevant to Internet freedom (such as broadband connections, percentage of users online, etc.) and allow individuals the ability to easily access this data in a form similar to a weather app.

Public users have the following features on the app, broken down as :

Geolocation to view current country’s stats
Search for metrics by country
Search for individual metric views
View global statistics
View other countries’ stats
View stats by world regions

About the Client

The Berkman Klein Center's mission is to explore and understand cyberspace; to study its development, dynamics, norms, and standards; and to assess the need or lack thereof for laws and sanctions. They are a research center, premised on the observation that what they seek to learn is not already recorded. Their method is to build out into cyberspace, record data as we go, self-study, and share. Their mode is entrepreneurial nonprofit.
